The dream of Antonio Prudente and his wife, Carmen, came true. Fifty years ago, the São Paulo University (USP) professor, then already renowned the world over for his work against cancer, and by his colleagues in the São Paulo Association Against Cancer (APCC), decided to mobilize the business sector, government, students and the general public to create what became the Hospital of Cancer. Today, the almost two hundred specialists in the institution - distinguished worldwide for its excellence and advances in care - are constantly updating their learning in the main international teaching and cancer research centers. "We have an ally in technology, to spread learning and research, as well as care", states Ademilson Andrade, head of the institution"s Engineering and Maintenance Department.

He says that the reason for hiring VipPhone arose when it chose Embratel"s Clube 21
Empresarial, in June 1999: "We registered with fidelity, for the purpose of saving, enjoying the discounts given by Embratel, since we included the company as the only carrier, as a utility route in our PABX. After a long period of fidelity, we signed a new agreement for VipPhone, in January 2003, thereby obtaining further discounts. This contract kicked off the structuring of the new data and voice transmission system."
Andrade continues: "The benefits of working only with one phone carrier are the bigger ongoing discounts, unlike occasional discounts from competitors. The technical question also weighed in the choice. We will shortly, for example, have redundancy for the system, since we have two radios to be linked up."

Telecommunication support

The philosophy of the Hospital of Cancer to always strive for the most modern and best in care and research, according to José Francisco Vieira Junior, specialist responsible for the hospital"s Development and Telecommunications System area, also led the institution to hire Business Link Direct, providing the Hospital of Cancer with highly efficient internet/intranet, and which today has a 1 Mbps link.

Andrade explains: "The hospital strives to be the best and most modern center of cancer treatment, research and learning in Latin America, and this is also due to the ongoing establishment of more effective methods of treatment against cancer, offering higher rates of cure, and which requires an efficient telecommunication support. So we needed an extremely reliable service, since the information has to be disseminated in real time".

Pioneering spirit

The Hospital of Cancer, the first and foremost integrated center of cancer research, learning and treatment in Brazil, first school of oncology and cancer nursing in the country, has been a pioneer in a number of activities of cancer-related care, treatment and teaching. It uses methods, such as acupuncture, to control the cancer pain, and has a center for information, leisure and emotional support to patients and their families. The result is the cure of two in every three adults with cancer, and three in every four children.

Ademilson Andrade explains that, within this philosophy of excellence in services, Embratel was chosen because of its tradition and reliability of the services provided: "The company"s solid structure permits the Hospital of Cancer to honor its commitments and assure the quality of its services.
