Ready for possible accidents

Eaton Brazil, subsidiary of the American corporation headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio (that earned US$ 8.5 billion in 2003), hired Embratel's Business Hosting in the Web Dedicated modality, for its Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP).  The idea is to be able to maintain the company's information system structure in case of accident in their data center, which works out of the town of Valinhos in São Paulo State.  The Brazilian data center is considered level 1 in international rating set by Eaton Corporation.

The website will be hosted at Proceda, Embratel's partner in the service, and implemented according to the schedule fixed by the three companies involved in the process.  With Business Hosting, explains Oswaldo Luiz Agostinho, technology manager for Eaton, the company intends to prevent downtime of business when it would be impossible to use the information systems that make it run.  "The intention to hire the hosting comes from a corporate guideline from Eaton Corporation for level 1 data centers, such as Valinhos", he explains.

Complete solution

Business Hosting is a service for companies that have adopted joint management to cut costs in administrating information technology, with a complete family that meets all the segment's demands, from just hosting pages in Embratel servers to hosting the company's own network and all applications. The Web Dedicated modality is a complete end-to-end solution for hosting equipment with connectivity to Internet, which offers the entire infrastructure in equipment, software, routers and switches on Embratel or partner premises, plus complete management of equipment and applications installed in the hosting areas.

This is the structure to be used for the Eaton Disaster Recovery Plan. Eaton is also a customer of Empresa Brasileira de Telecomunicações in other services, such as Business Link, with 1 Mbps, for a dedicated connection to Internet, and VipPhone, linking up the company's PABX to the fully digital Embratel network, cutting the costs of DDD and IDD calls of the Brazilian branch offices in its four divisions: Transmission Division, with units in Valinhos and Mogi Mirim; The Automotive Division with plant in São José dos Campos; the Fluid Power Division, with units in Guarulhos and Guaratinguetá, all in the State of São Paulo; and the Electrical Division, with plants in Rio de Janeiro and Sorocaba. Eaton has a network in Brazil of approximately 5,000 representatives and distributors.

Private network

Another important service hired by Eaton from Embratel was an IP VPN with MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) technology, at a speed varying from 64 kbps to 2,048 kbps. This network is used to send data between the various Eaton websites in Brazil (Campinas, Mogi Mirim, São José dos Campos, Guaratinguetá, Guarulhos, Rio de Janeiro and soon in Sorocaba) to the central website in Valinhos, which directs all websites, including Valinhos, to Eaton Corporation in Cleveland. The network also includes voice traffic over IP (VoIP) to the Brazilian units. DRP hosting will be linked to IP VPN through an access point in Proceda.

"Embratel services are considered very good and the service will certainly be enhanced, especially concerning WAN support, since this network, including routers, will be fully managed by the carrier", points out Oswaldo Luiz Agostinho.
