Phoenix do Brasil, second largest exporter in Pernambuco in 2001, decided to invest steadily in information technology to leverage its business and reach 2005 with a profit of US$ 20 million, using its installed capacity of 100 million conventional resistors a week.  To do so, it began by changing the telecommunication system, moving over to Embratel solutions.

"Embratel's communication structure is fundamental for the company's globalization process, by using data and voice channels", affirms Marcos Guimarães, Technology vice-president for Phoenix do Brasil.  The company has hired FastNet, Business Link Flex, Office Dial, VipPhone, VipLine, Renpac and STM 400.

"We use the FastNet for a dedicated voice and data link between the Phoenix head office in Recife, and the São Paulo sales office, while Business Link Flex is for users to access Internet, and the STM 400 for exchanging EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) messages with customers.  We also highlight Office Dial, for remote access to our systems (e-mail, network, ERP) through notebooks, used mostly by the directors and sales assistants; while VipPhone and VipLine are a way to guarantee the availability, quality and efficiency of the services provided", explains Marcos.

Essential qualities

The Technology vice-president for Phoenix do Brasil continues: "The ease of communicate with speed and quality is essential for us to build up a company that has a better understanding of its customers and has an ever faster response than its competitors."  In his opinion, these aspects are even more essential in a company like Phoenix do Brasil, originating from a management buy-out, and which today operates with 500 employees, totally separate from Philips Components, as part of the Dutch corporation's world strategic plan.

Phoenix, headquartered in Recife, and totally independent, has its sales office in São Paulo and offices in Dallas (USA) and Milan (Italy). Looking ahead, it needs to be constantly updated in telecommunications because, as Marcos Guimarães explained, the offices overseas operate in different time zones and all systems must be available 24 hours a day.  "This is why we chose Embratel solutions", concludes the executive.
