Infoglobo, one of the Globo companies that centralizes the operations of the newspapers O Globo and Extra, in Rio de Janeiro, and Diário de São Paulo, in São Paulo capital, plus Agência Globo, has a closer partnership with Embratel in the last three years. It hired new services to meet its news media requirements as well as to improve its performance management, cut costs and expedite news and decision-making. The company's entire back office (finances, commercial department, human resources and technology, for example) is kept in its head office in Rio de Janeiro
Last year, the need for frequent meetings arose between the Infoglobo and Diário de São Paulo newspaper staff, involving a lot of travel. In order to provide more flexibility, Infoglobo decided to implement a videoconferencing system. |

In this context, Embratel was consulted to provide a solution and, considering that there was already a contract with the company for FastNet (linking up stores and offices in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Brasilia), it was offered the facility to create a permanent virtual circuit (PVC), specifically for videoconferencing, between the two addresses. Embratel was by then also supplying videoconferencing equipment in partnership with TES, a company with a world-class reputation, to permit virtual meetings of the heads of the Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo offices, without needing to travel, and with perfect interactivity.
"With the Embratel service, we not only saved on land travel and airfares, but also and principally time. We learned a lot so that these virtual meetings could become more dynamic and efficient, making it easier to take decisions", explains João Vicente Gonçalves, general manager of Technology for Infoglobo, working for the company almost four years now.
Access to internet made easy
Another Embratel state-of-the-art service hired is Business Dial, to facilitate access to internet of hundreds of press reporters and correspondents in the main Brazilian cities and rest of the world, with a specially designed solution for Infoglobo. The service allows O Globo, Extra, Diário de São Paulo and Agência Globo to easily receive information from anywhere, without the user having to spend on telecommunications (using 0800). Business Dial can also be provided for the large advertising companies (TV commercials) and business offices of the three newspapers (sending in ads). The service is available anywhere in Brazil and in more than 150 countries.
Key partnership
"Embratel is our partner because of its quality, reliability and security of its services, and its good attendance. Whenever necessary, which is seldom, the technical crews of Embratel soon solve the problems. And this is essential for Infoglobo, since we work with information and news that need to be available at any time, day or night, in real time. Agência Globo, for example, which sells news and pictures, also provides an online newscast for the corporate segment, and the efficiency of Embratel's service has been an important edge to our business", says João Vicente Gonçalves.
The general manager of Technology for Infoglobo recalls that, in addition to FastNet for voice and data transmission, the company uses other Embratel services, such as Business Link Direct, for access to internet, VipPhone National and International (connecting its PABX to the fully digital network of the carrier in DDD and IDD calls) and Renpac, for the newspaper O Globo subscriber cards: "We hope to continue this partnership for many years, hiring new services as the demand requires and Embratel supplies us, since the company is always in telecom technology state-of-the-art."
João Vicente adds: "This is one of the reasons for the partnership: as we are leaders in our market, since O Globo and Extra dominate the circulation in Rio de Janeiro, in their respective public, and Diário de São Paulo has a growing circulation, we need a carrier who is also a leader in telecommunications, which is the case of Embratel."
